What is a venn diagram?

Venn diagrams are a fun and easy to understand way to visualize the overlap between variables in your data but also where they differ. People often use Venn diagrams to visually organize and communicate information, to compare two or more choices and data sets or to reason through the logic behind statements or equations.

The beauty of a Venn diagram is that they can range from simple to more complex configurations. The simplest and most commonly known Venn diagram involves two circles which represent two different groups. The area of overlap between these two circles shows what they have in common.

Venn diagram FAQs

What is a venn diagram?

A venn diagram uses overlapping shapes to illustrate the similarities, differences and logical relationship between sets or groups of data. It is most commonly used to highlight the commonalities between opposing factions or groups.

Within each closed shape (normally a circle), are all the data points that fit in that category. Where two shapes intersect, or overlap is the data that is shared by both categories. The most common Venn diagram contains three overlapping circles; however, they can have more sets and use different shapes.

What is a venn diagram also called?

A venn diagram is also called a primary diagram, set diagram or logic diagram.

Why use a venn diagram?

Venn diagrams are a great way to visually organise information and see the relationship between different sets of items. They are useful for highlighting what two groups have in common as well as what makes them different. However, Venn diagrams become harder to read when there are more than 3 sets and therefore should not be used if you want to compare many sets.
